How to Prevent Verbal & Emotional Abuse

Verbal and emotional abuse are extremely insidious forms of abuse that often happen in destructive relationships. They are hard to deal with because, unlike physical and sexual abuse, they do not have physical signs. Preventing them is difficult, but it is important because of the way it can essentially ruin your life. In order to prevent them, you need to make it clear that they are not acceptable. What's more, you need to set -- then follow through with -- clear consequences.

    Look for verbal and emotional abuse. This is arguably the most-difficult step because of these abuses' insidious nature. If someone loses his temper from time to time, he's not necessarily abusing you. Rather, you should look for constant needling, attacking your personality (rather than your actions) and being extremely unpredictable. You need to establish exactly how you are being verbally and emotionally abused before you can take action to stop it.

    Avoid responding to his verbal and emotional abuse. The entire point of this kind of abuse is to get a reaction out of you. It doesn't necessarily have to be verbal, but could be as simple as a drop in eye contact or visibly appearing upset. So, by ignoring your abuser you are denying him a reward for his abuse.

    Tell the abuser how it makes you feel. Now that you've thought of how he's abusing you and what specific things he does that are verbal and emotional abuse, you can respond to them directly. So, rather than saying "when you are unpleasant it makes me feel bad," you can say "when you criticize the things that you know I'm insecure about in front of your friends, it makes me feel bad." Now that she knows exactly what she's doing and how it makes you feel, she no longer has ignorance as an excuse.

    Walk away from the abuser. Whether he's a friend, boyfriend or co-worker, you don't have to put up with this kind of behavior. So, if the steps above don't work within a few weeks, simply cease contact with the abuser. If he is going to act like this, he doesn't deserve to have you in his life, so you need to show some self-respect and find someone else to spend time with.
