How to Make Effective Hand Gestures

The majority of human communication is non-verbal. Palomar College reports that up to 70 percent of human communication is conveyed through "paralanguage," which refers to facial gestures and body movements. Efficient physicality is therefore vital to effective communication to prevent misunderstanding or the wrong message from being sent. Effective hand gestures assist you in getting the other person to comprehend your intentions even when vocal inflection fails.

Instructions

Freeze the rest of your body when making the hand gesture so you are otherwise as still as possible. This encourages the other person to focus on your hands and to not be distracted by other movement.

Use gestures that have a largely understood meaning. For example, placing a pointer finger vertically against your lips symbolizes "be quiet." Holding your palm up while waiving your fingers towards yourself is widely recognized as "come here" or "come closer." Common gestures help prevent miscommunication.

Point to things you want to draw attention to. A sharp point will cause many people to automatically turn and look in that direction even without a word said. This helps you direct someone's focus.

Make large, exaggerated gestures to ensure someone understands you from farther away. Smaller gestures are more likely to be misread or not seen at all. Exaggerated motions make your message clearer and further help you keep the other person's attention.

Emphasize your gestures using facial expressions and vocal inflection. Making a "come here" gesture while looking angry and saying "go away" will confuse your audience. Meanwhile, making the same gesture with a smile and a welcoming tone helps to reinforce the message you're conveying.
