How to Stay Friends With an Ex

So you've heard those three little words, '"Let's be friends," but now what? The chemistry may be gone, but if you and your ex are sincere about wanting to be friends, you really can transform an old relationship into a new friendship.

Instructions

Take some time apart after breaking up and allow the wounds to heal. The amount of time you need varies depending on the relationship and the breakup, but if you are still hurting, keep waiting.

Find another confidante, someone you can share the little things with, someone who can help you kill the urge to pick up the phone and call your ex.

Decide whether trying to be friends is actually what you want, or if it is the best thing for you and your ex. If you or your ex isn't ready for the friendship, don't force it. Just because you can't be friends now, doesn't mean you won't be able to reunite as friends later.

Start another romance if possible. It doesn't have to be serious, but something to build your confidence and to give you those butterflies in your stomach. By opening yourself to the possibilities of a new love interest, you can avoid the temptation of getting back together with your ex.

Keep new relationships out of the discussion; it's an invitation for trouble. The last thing you want in your new friendship is a whirlwind of confused emotion, and talking about new relationships is cruel, creates jealousy and is simply uncomfortable. You may find that after a substantial period of time, you can safely discuss your relationships with one another. But, it is best to avoid it for as long as possible.
