Most of us have turned off our cell phones or Smartphones just to avoid an unwanted caller -- and then we feel reluctant to check our voicemail messages. But if you often dread your ringing phone because someone calls relentlessly, you may be the victim of a stalker. Maybe it's an ex-girlfriend or an ex-boyfriend, or a co-worker who has a crush on you. It could be an irate neighbor or someone with a grudge. Whoever it is, they don't have a right to invade your privacy.
Instructions
- 1
Check your mobile device for a "Send Straight to Voicemail" option. Most Smartphones and newer cell phones are equipped with this feature, which automatically directs any caller in your address book to voicemail when your phone is on. All calls go to voicemail when your device is turned off. If you're using an older phone that doesn't provide this feature, consider an upgrade.
2Put the unwanted caller's name (if known) and number into your contact list. Activate the "Send Straight to Voicemail" option. You can relax now when your phone rings.
3Go to YouMail and set up a free account. After your account is activated, you can create a contacts list. Once you've entered the stalker's details into your contacts list, click the "ditchmail" symbol (the red circle with a bar across it), which will prevent the caller from leaving voicemail messages. By following Steps 2 and 3, calls from the stalker will not ring your phone and messages cannot be left from that number.
4Select an outgoing ditchmail message for the stalker in your YouMail contacts so that he doesn't get your real outgoing message. There are many available messages to pick from. For example, you can choose a message that announces that your phone has been disconnected. If the caller hears this repeatedly, it may deter him from calling again.
5Repeat these steps as necessary, if the stalker figures out what is happening and tries calling from another number. It may be annoying, but eventually the caller may give up.
6Change your phone number, if the above steps do not work. This would be a last resort since it involves having to tell your friends, family, colleagues and acquaintances your new number.
7Call the police and make a report if you feel physically threatened or you cannot rid yourself of the stalker by other means. Gather any supporting evidence (such as messages or call logs) and present it to law enforcement. Even if you're not certain about the identity of your stalker, you should report him or her to the authorities.
