How to Get My Boyfriend on the Right Track to Being a Good Dad

Putting your boyfriend on any kind of track can be a difficult task, let alone training him for fatherhood. Whether you have kids already, or are wanting them in the future, prepare yourself as your boyfriend may not be looking for this lifestyle just yet. Before you try training your boyfriend, find out what he wants and is actually looking for. If your priorities don't match, be ready to move on and find someone who has more in common with you. If he is wanting the fatherhood lifestyle, he may just be a little clueless and need a nudge in the right direction.

Talk it out. Let him know exactly what you are looking for. If you have kids and need him to be involved in their lives, let him know this. The earlier the expectations and hopes are laid out, the earlier that you will be able to decide if you are meant to be together or not. It's possible that your boyfriend may want to be a good dad but has no idea how to do so. If this is the case, give him a few pointers on things that he can do to interact with your kids.

Organize family time. Spend time with your boyfriend and the kids. This takes the pressure off of him so that he can look to you if he has questions or doubts. Also, he will be able to bond with your kids and get to know them before being subjected to one on one time. Face it; sometimes kids can be overwhelming for those who have little experience dealing with them.

Understand that you are in it together. If you and your boyfriend have just had your own child, keep him involved by letting him experience all of the newness with you. Take turns on the midnight feedings and diaper changes. Go shopping together for supplies and go to doctors appointments as a team. If you start out working on raising your child as a team, your boyfriend will quickly slip into the role.

Leave time for yourself. It's important for your boyfriend to bond with your child without you. The easiest way to learn how to deal with a situation is to go about it alone. If you are constantly by his side every time a problem arises, then it is likely that he his letting you deal with the hard stuff. In order for your boyfriend to build a solid relationship with your child or children, let him build his own bond with them.

Spend time around kids. You may be preparing your boyfriend to be a father in the future. If this is the case, take him to family events. Let him interact with kids in your extended family. Baby sit your friends children and invite him to help you. Visit theme parks and malls where lots of children tend to be so that he can get used to the sporadic actions and likely chaos that kids may bring to the table. Try to prepare him for kids in all situations.
