Having your heart broken may not be a technically accurate statement, but is a very descriptive one. The feelings engendered by a loved one leaving are quite overwhelming. It is no consolation to be told that "it happens to everyone" or "you'll get over it," even if those statements are almost always true. It is also true that the pain will lessen with time, and that you will be a stronger and wiser person as a result of this trying experience. However, there are positive steps you can take now to lessen the heartache.
Taking Small Steps
Do not fight the way you are feeling. Tell yourself that, for now, it is okay to cry and feel low. Avoid the temptation to get in touch with your ex because this will make the whole situation worse. Do this by taking each day at a time, and telling yourself that you will not phone or text today. The urge will pass, and you will feel stronger for not giving into temptation. Avoid going places where you are likely to bump into him.
Warmth
Spend time with people who care about you. The care and warmth of family and friends will help to restore your feelings of self-worth which will have been damaged by the break-up. Tell yourself how lucky you are to have people in your life who care, and show them how appreciative you are.
Motivation
Recognize that staying at home, particlarly waiting for the phone to ring, can become a destructive behavior pattern. Make yourself go out with friends even if you do not really feel like doing this. Something interesting or distracting could happen and you will be glad you went. Begin taking regular exercise as this improves the mood.
Opening doors
Try positive thinking. Tell yourself that one door has closed to make room for another one that will open. This makes you more receptive to new experiences and new relationships which come into your life.
