The Effects of Cheating Partners on Relationships

Cheating in a relationship is damaging on several levels. Not only is there the initial shock and hurt once it's revealed, but there are many lingering issues that, in many cases, are insurmountable and might never be recovered from no matter the length of time that passes. Some couples break up, while others soldier on. Regarding the latter, it is important to know and fully understand the issues that are facing you as you attempt to mend the relationship.

Trust

Cheating, whether it's found out or admitted, almost always shocks the person who finds out. If you were suspicious to begin with, then your worries are dubiously confirmed. If you were more of a trusting partner, you feel embarrassed and betrayed. Either way, learning to trust the cheating partner again will be hard to do in spite of her best efforts. It can take longer to get your trust back than it did for her to earn the trust initially.

Jealousy

Once your partner cheats, it can be hard not to become jealous when your significant other crosses paths with someone of the opposite sex. Be it a female sitting next to him at a concert or a coworker he's working with on a project together, you may find it difficult to not let it bother you. Even if you do feel that he has changed and you have learned to trust him again, you may irrationally think that the other woman has the power to make him revert to his old ways.

Low Self-Esteem

On an intellectual level, you may be fully aware that you are a more than viable person and relationship partner. However, many people who are cheated on still struggle with that nagging voice that tells them that it was their own shortcomings that led to their partner's cheating. In some cases, people resort to unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as drugs or excessive alcohol, which can further complicate the relationship and thus lead to more cheating in the future, starting a vicious cycle.

Resentment

Once all has been forgiven and trust has begun to be restored, the sting of being cheated on can still lurk in the shadows in spite of your best intentions. One danger is that in future arguments -- even ones that don't pertain to unfaithfulness -- you will bitterly bring up her ill-advised tryst, connecting it to the issue at hand somehow. On the flip side, she may feel that she has paid her due penance and may consider leaving the relationship because she sees that he will never live it down.
