How to Break Up Nicely

Breaking up with someone is never easy but no matter how difficult, should always be done nicely. The end of a relationship can be a very emotional time, but the guilt, anger or sadness involved should not affect the way you deal with this person you used to have feelings for. Here are some things to remember before having the conversation.

Be sure. Make sure you are ready to end the relationship. Don't open the door to heartbreak only to go back to the relationship in a few days. f you are going to end it, think it over first and be sure.

Don't be friends. Cutting ties is difficult, but is really the kindest thing you can do for your ex. Don't feel obligated to listen to them lament the end of the affair. Remember, that is what their friends are for.

Go forward boldly. Don't put off the inevitable. Don't act a jerk to get them to break up with you first and don't avoid phone calls or stand up your date. When it comes time to break it off, be brave and just end it.

Be up front about why the affair is over. Anyone who has been through this knows that wondering what happened in the relationship can last longer than the relationship itself. If they ask and need details, kindly tell them.

Respect. Have this conversation in private and at a time that will allow both of you to talk about the relationship. Don' t do it over the phone or in a crowded place, and avoid meaningful dates, such as holidays or birthdays.

Take a step back and don't be defensive. Remember, this breakup is your idea and may come as a shock to your ex. They may get mean, insulting and cruel. Don't get sucked into the drama. Walk away.
