The Best Boston Area Towns for Singles

Boston has a highly educated and well-paid work force and many professionals commute to their jobs from nearby cities and towns. Significant populations of successful single people have settled in communities around Boston. Some cities and towns have developed businesses and social organizations that cater to singles interested in friendship and romance.

CNNMoney.com named Newton, a city about seven miles west of downtown Boston, the second best place for singles in the United States. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, roughly 31 percent of the city's affluent population of about 82,000 residents is single. Newton is divided into more than a dozen small neighborhoods, each with its own distinct center of shops and restaurants. The small village character of life in Newton makes it easy for to meet and get to know neighbors. The Post Club, a dating service that specializes in singles events and personal introductions arranged by staff members is based in Newton.

Cambridge, a city just west of Boston, is home to Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The roughly 100,000 residents of Cambridge are well-educated, successful, diverse and more than 40 percent are single. The city has a rich variety of cultural, intellectual and civic organizations that bring residents together and Cambridge nightlife ranges from traditional to ultra-urban and hip. The original home of Facebook, Cambridge also has many social networking sites that offer resources and tips on how to meet people with common backgrounds and interests.

Brookline ranked third in CNN's list of the top U.S.cities for singles. The city has a reputation for fashionable restaurant, shops and high-end real estate that ranges from luxury condos to mansions and estates. Approximately 42 percent of Brookline's 58,000 residents are single and many work nearby in Boston's Longwood area where some of the country's most prestigious hospitals and medical research centers are located. Brookline's businesses cater to the large populations of Jewish and Russian residents, and those groups have their own organizations and networks for singles and dating.

Marblehead, an historic port town about 16 miles north of Boston, is known for its beaches, restaurants, galleries and nightlife. Roughly 20,000 people live in town and about 29 percent are single. Marblehead's yacht clubs, arts groups and night spots draw crowds of singles from surrounding communities. Marblehead singles also connect through organizations such as North of 40 Dancers, a group for singles interested in ballroom dancing, and North of Boston Jewish Singles.
