Tips on Overcoming a Breakup

It is normal to grieve over a breakup just as you would over a loved one's death. Breakups are usually painful because they represent loss and change. The length of a grieving period following a breakup is varied and depends on different factors. However, there are some things you can do to help yourself overcome your breakup.

Supportive Friends

Many people want to be alone following a breakup, but supportive friends and family will help you overcome your breakup. Talking to people who understand what you are going through can be a big help. Join a support group, make an appointment with a therapist, or just talk about your feelings to your friends. Force yourself to go out to a social event at least once a week. Isolation can make it more difficult to overcome your breakup.

Hobbies

Find something new to do. Many activities may remind you of your ex so find a new hobby. This can help distract you and focus your attention on something other than your breakup. Learn a musical instrument, start scrapbooking, knit, exercise, or anything else you think you would enjoy. Join a group about your new activity so that you can meet new people who enjoy the same thing as you. Starting a new life without your ex will help you overcome your breakup.

Vent Your Feelings

Besides talking to supportive people, use other types of outlets to express your feelings. Write in a journal, paint, or create a scrapbook. Many times following a breakup, people feel angry. Take up kickboxing or boxing to help release your anger. You can write a letter to your ex that you never send, expressing your feelings. Make a breakup playlist and choose songs that express how you feel. Read self-help books to help normalize your feelings.

Closure

Letting go of a relationship is sometimes harder than grieving a death. Your ex is still around and there is always that "what if" feeling. To help you obtain closure, you need to eliminate the possibility of reconciliation. Take down pictures of your ex and put them in a box. Don't talk to him unless necessary. Do not spy on him or her online, for example, as checking his or her Facebook page. Overcoming a breakup means letting go.
