How to Prevent Feeling Heartbroken

Pain associated with heartbreak is devastating. The only way to prevent a broken heart is never to fully open up yourself to somebody emotionally. However, no feeling is permanent and the pain will eventually pass. A few steps can minimize the severity and duration of heartache, helping you prevent feeling heartbroken.

Instructions

    1

Spend time with your friends throughout the relationship. Although it's tempting to be with your significant other all the time, heartbreak is easier to overcome if you continue to hang out with friends and participate in activities you enjoy throughout the relationship. Heartbreak can come with feelings of uncertainty or loneliness, but taking precautions can thwart those feelings because you will still have people to see and things to do should the relationship end.

    2

Take care of your body. Taking care of yourself is key to happiness. After a relationship, although it might be tempting to lock yourself away, drink, overeat (or not eat at all) and be miserable, none of those things will produce a positive result. Balance your diet, avoid excess alcohol, exercise and remain on a normal sleep schedule. A healthy body will help heal an unhappy heart.

    3

Choose a friend (or a couple of friends) to call, text or e-mail whenever you want to text your ex. Breaking habits is difficult, and distancing yourself from your ex after a breakup is challenging. Your head may logically know what steps to take, but your heart is telling you that just a quick call or text to your ex will make you feel better. Allow yourself to make that call or send that text, just change the person you're contacting. Your friends will understand and you'll remain connected people who care about you.

    4

Make a list of things you didn't like about the person you just broke up with. Little annoyances or things that bugged you during the relationship are easily forgotten in post-relationship nostalgia. Don't discount the good times, but don't forget the bad times, either. Remembering less-than-perfect aspects of the relationship, without focusing or obsessing on those things, makes it easier to move on.

    5

Write through your thoughts and feelings. Putting emotions on paper is an excellent way to work through them. To take a more creative approach, write a love story in which you (or a character like you) is the protagonist and falls deeply in love, living happily ever after. Include your ex in this story, but make him a less significant, less attractive, less likable character.
