How to Tell Your Parents About a Long-Distance Relationship

Telling your parents about a long-distance relationship may seem intimidating. While love is intensely personal, being young and still living in your parent's home may eventually result in disclosing the truth about your long-distance relationship. There are certain ways to do this that can open their minds to the idea of your relationship and initiate trust. Remember, any concern they may have is for your own good. If you want this long-distance relationship to work however, there are many positive ways to tell the truth to Mom and Dad.

Instructions

Sit them down and explain the situation. This is the most basic, recommended way to let your parents know about a long-distance relationship. While you may be tempted to drop little hints here and there, or just keep the entire relationship a secret, they may eventually find out on their own. Explain that you are in a relationship with someone you like, and want to keep it despite the distance.

Be honest about your reasoning. If you are willing to be in a long-distance relationship with someone, it is clear you value that person enough to sacrifice closeness, convenience and instant gratification. Let your parents know how often you plan to meet with your significant other in person, and what your plans are for communication. They may simply want to make sure you have balance in your life; enough time for friends, activities, rest and study is important.

Listen to their perspective. This is a vital step to achieving understanding about your long-distance relationship. While you may think your parents are controlling, they likely have your best interests at heart. Listen to what they say and consider their perspective. Your willingness to hear them out will likely open their minds to the idea of your relationship.

Make an informed decision. While your parents cannot dictate who you love, their disapproval may serve as a source of stress in your relationship if you decide to stay in it against their will. Consider all their concerns and try to understand what they foresee happening in your life as a result of this relationship. Once you have analyzed their point of view, make an informed decision that is ultimately your own. The decision you make should leave you feeling happy, lightweight and at peace about your relationship and your well-being.
