Contact your boyfriend in advance. Use written communication, such as text or email, to contact your boyfriend and tell him that you need to pick up your belongings. By doing so, you can avoid some verbal abuse that may come along with such a communication. If your email or text is met with an abusive response, document this response, particularly if you are pressing charges against him.
2Select a safe time. Arrange to pick up your items during the day, preferably when he is away from his home. The bright and busy daylight hours are decidedly safer than under the cloak of night.
3Go with support. Don't go to pick up these belongings alone under any circumstances. Instead, select several friends or family members to accompany you. When choosing these individuals, do so carefully. Don't pick someone who you know is angry with your boyfriend; the last thing you need is for the task to result in a physical fight.
4Avoid arguing over belongings. If, as you are picking up your belongings, your boyfriend insists that some of the things are his, leave these items and deal with them at a later date. If worse comes to worse, you can always go to small claims court over those items. Getting into a heated argument about them will likely only end badly.
5Seek a police escort if necessary. If you are currently pressing charges against your boyfriend, or there is a restraining order in effect, it is wise to contact the police and arrange an escort. By doing so you can avoid any potential danger associated with this event.
Even if you are not pressing charges or there is no restraining order, you can see about getting a police escort if you are concerned about conflict while you are getting your things. Many police departments provide what they call a peacekeeping service for people who are picking up property.
