In a relationship, trust is something that's gained. Trust issues at the beginning of a relationship are normal since someone's guard still needs to be let down. This is a gradual process that can take several years. The only real trust issues that occur involve a loss of trust and previous relationship problems that lead to one partner not willingly trusting others.

Past Relationships

Each betrayal in a past relationship leaves the individual emotionally hurt and afraid of new relationships. Some individuals start to believe that they will always be mistreated or cheated on in a relationship, and they emotionally distance themselves from their new partners. Fortunately, if the other partner remains faithful and tries to get the partner to open up emotionally, trust can be slowly rebuilt. Continued positive experiences in the relationship over a long period of time can help build trust.

Prevention

Betrayal should be avoided at all cost. Both partners should have an idea of where the boundaries are and what is expected out of the relationship, and no one should violate any of these boundaries. Once betrayal occurs, trust can be restored in a relationship. But this trust takes a very long time to restore. In some cases, trust is lost altogether and has to be rebuilt slowly. When trust is betrayed, retaliations should be avoided because these retaliations will only make trust more difficult to regain.

False Betrayals

Sometimes rumors, coincidences and outside interference can cause trust to be temporarily lost. Some individuals have mean personalities and deliberately try to break couples up. There are also situations where a faithful partner might appear to be unfaithful. For instance, a partner might have to go away on a trip with a co-worker of the opposite sex, leading to suspicions. When the situation is exposed for what it really is, trust can be regained.

Anxiety

Some partners have low self-esteem and can start to develop anxiety over the relationship, fearing betrayal. This suspicion can actually drive the other partner away or even anger the partner, as he or she is being unjustly accused. With time, this anxiety goes away as trust builds.

Prejudice

Some individuals feel distrust toward members of the other gender. For instance, some women might believe that all men cheat. With a faithful partner, the woman might feel that it is only a matter of time before the cheating begins. This distrust can only be resolved by challenging these assumptions.
