Differences Between Dating and Hanging Out

A lot of relationships start with casual social occasions rather than full-fledged dates. Beginning a relationship by hanging out together instead of dating releases some of the pressure of getting to know each other since you don't have to make a decision on whether to pursue a closer relationship. This relaxed, low-pressure get-together comes at a price as it can be difficult to tell when you are officially dating and when you are still just hanging out. Although nothing short of a frank discussion lets you know for certain, there are a number of signs that can help you deduce whether you are out together as romantic partners or just friends.

Number of People

Dates usually involve only two people, while hanging out is often done in groups. If you are invited along by someone to a trip to the movies, a group hike or a party, it is more likely to be considered hanging out than dating. There is some ambiguity because you may be invited to a party as a date, particularly if it is a more elaborate or formal event.

Location

Casual activities are generally classified as hanging out -- either an innocent chance to spend time together as friends or an opportunity to spend time with a potential partner without the pressure of an actual date. Hanging out events include getting coffee, studying for a class and going shopping together. Dating events are generally more intimate and involved. A date might include dinner, a movie or a mutually enjoyed activity, such as an outdoor hike.

Preparation

Hanging out usually involves both people arriving at a predetermined spot for some activity, then going their separate ways afterward. Dating, on the other hand, often involves the couple planning a series of activities to do together. A date often begins with one partner picking up the other and going to dinner, a movie, a concert or some other location. In many cases, the partner planning the date also pays the date's way, something that rarely happens when hanging out.

Feelings

The biggest fears in these types of relationships involve whether you're dating or just hanging out. If you feel like you need to talk a particular friend just to hear her voice or find that she calls you all the time, it is a good sign that you are approaching a dating relationship or that one of you wants it to be. Similarly, if you find yourself spending a lot more time with one friend than you do with the rest, it may turn into dating. It is always possible, however, that you feel the two of you are dating and your friend doesn't, or vice versa. At this point, talking to your friend about your relationship status should help clear up the ambiguity.
