Leaving an abusive relationship takes strength, courage and a plan of action. If you have children, it makes the situation even more difficult and stressful. However, if you are in an abusive relationship, leaving the person as soon as possible is necessary. Putting a plan in place quickly can keep you and your children out of further danger.

Instructions

    1

Make a safety plan. Figure out where you will go and how you will get there. Decide where you will stay and make sure that your boyfriend cannot find you there. If you do not have a friend or family member to stay with, contact a local battered women's shelter. Set aside as much money as you can to make the move. Pack up important documents and spare cash. Put them in a safe place until you can physically remove yourself from the home.

    2

Call the police. When you are ready to leave, use the police to help you with your escape. This can make the transition a bit easier on both you and your children. It can also prevent your boyfriend from intervening, trying to take the children, trying to keep items that belong to you or physically harming you or the kids. The police can also document the situation so that there is proof of what has happened in case your boyfriend tries to further harm or threaten you.

    3

Protect yourself and your children. Get a restraining order or order of protection as soon as possible. Do not leave any trace of where you are. Change your phone number and the locks on the doors of where you are staying, if possible. Do not leave any evidence of where you are or who you may be staying with. Tell as few people as possible of your location and your future plans.

    4

Get support. Leaving an abusive relationship, especially with children, is extremely difficult and scary. Find people who you can talk to and count on, and who will be there for you when you need to talk. Be sure that they are people you can trust who will not give any information to your ex-boyfriend. It is a good idea to seek out a professional counselor to help you deal with issues surrounding the abusive relationship.
