How to Deal With a Clingy Boyfriend

Being in a relationship with a guy who feels you must spend every waking hour together is suffocating. His constant contact will eventually cause you more bad than good as you feel like you can't do anything without him. From his need to text, call and be with you all the time to him losing a sense of his own personal needs, it's time to have a talk with him. When your boyfriend's behavior has become clingy, let him know you need a bit of space and can't take his obsessive behavior much longer.

Instructions

    1

Give yourself a bit of distance from him by suggesting you each do separate things. As he gradually tries to fill your every waking moment together, back away from him a bit and start doing things solo. When he says he's going to come over to go to the store with you, let him know you're going to go right after the gym and you'll talk to him later. See if he takes the hint before you have to outright confront him.

    2

Send him off with his friends to have a little fun without you. Consider that he could be clinging to you for your sake and thinks he is providing your relationship with a sense of stability. Let him know you're OK with the two of you spending time with other friends.

    3

Tell him how you feel if he still hasn't taken the hint. If after you've made subtle attempts to let him know you want some "you" time, sit your guy down and ask him what's really going on. Being clingy is a common response to insecurities and he may feel for some reason that if he doesn't keep you close, he'll lose you. Allow him a chance to voice his reasons for being so overly connected to you.

    4

Ask him for some time away in which you can clear your head and be without him for a while. Telling your beau you need a break means you don't want to see him for a couple of weeks. Explain to him the reason for your need for independence and the things you lack in your day-to-day life, such as spending time with your friends, due to his clingy behavior. Putting the relationship on hold will allow both of you a chance to see how serious the matter is.

    5

End the relationship when he still doesn't seem to abide by your wishes for time apart. If he responds poorly to your recent requests and just doesn't leave you alone, there may be some more serious issues developing and you need to make your break permanent. Don't put yourself in a situation where he may turn abusive or violent. Make a clean break-up and let him know perhaps you can develop a friendship at a later time.
