How to Ask a Girl to a School Dance If I'm Really Nervous

It's only natural to feel a little nervous before you ask someone out on a date. Even the hint of rejection may feel a knockout punch to your self-esteem. These may seem like pretty high stakes and may, in essence, form the root of your shyness or nervousness when approaching the girl you like. To overcome this anxiety, realize the ultimate answer, whether yes or no, does not define you as a person. This takes the pressure off of her answer, and gives you the opportunity to find the one who is right for you.

Stop worrying about all the reasons why she might say no. If you answer your own question and think about why she might not like you before you even approach her, you are doing yourself - and the girl - an injustice. You're making assumptions about how she feels about you without giving her a chance to express her own feelings. Worse, you're validating your own nervousness.

Pump yourself up with lots of positive self-talk. People are not the sum of their flaws; focus instead on your attributes. Remember that you have value and plenty to offer to another person. Remind yourself about those skills and talents that make you who you are. These qualities do not hinge on whether you're single or in a couple, which takes the pressure off regarding her answer.

Practice in front of a mirror to work through your nervousness. Try different ways of asking her out, and pay attention to your body language to learn how to convey confidence with nonverbal communication. Stand with your spine straight but not rigid, your shoulders squared and your arms at your side rather than crossed in front of you. Look her in the eye and smile.

Be direct when you ask her on a date. Do it face-to-face even though it might be tempting to go through other people, write a note or send a text. Keep in mind all the positive affirmation you've used to boost your self-esteem and remind yourself that she'd have fun going out with you. Confidence is sexy.
