The Best Ways to Start a Clean Breakup

As Neil Sedaka famously sang, breaking up is hard to do particularly if you want your breakup to be a clean one. Instead of allowing your romance to come to a crashing end, take control of the death of your current relationship and make your ending a neat and tidy one, leaving no problems with which you will later have to deal and allowing you the chance to create a mutually supportive and cordial relationship with the former flame in the future.

Dont think that just because the relationship has come to a close you can stop working through the issues that lead to the relationships end. Instead, sit down with the ex-partner as you end your relationship and talk about the problems that plagued your union. By doing so, you can develop a mutual understanding, making your future interactions less fraught with conflict.

If you and your partner have been casually dating and share no possessions, housing or children, breaking up will be much easier. If, on the other hand, you have been together for a long time and have property or children in common, you will have to figure out how you plan to co-parent or divide your assets. Make this discussion a top priority and start it as soon as you draw the relationship to a close -- if you dont you will not be able to make a truly clean break. If you can discuss these divisions together without argument, do so as a couple. If not, consider involving a mediator in the proceedings to ensure that it doesnt turn into a feud. If you share real estate or children, you will ultimately need to obtain a legal ruling on ownership and custody rights to secure the decision you reach, so you should begin the proceedings, however painful, right away.

If the end of your relationship was particularly explosive, dont try to jump right into being friends. Instead, commit to not talking to each other at all for a set period of time, perhaps a week or a month. By doing so, you can allow yourselves time to cool down and improve the likelihood that the next time you talk you can do so without arguing.

While you may decide that you want nothing to do with your former flame, many elect to not vacate the relationship all together, but instead simply redefine it. If you take this route, you must consciously discuss how your relationship will change, creating boundaries that you can both stay within to ensure that your future interactions are positive. For example, if you want to be friends with your ex, you may put a prohibition against talking about your past relationship, as you dont want to rehash this failed romance ad nauseum.

Post breakup, your relationship will likely remain a work in progress. If the new relationship boundaries you established dont seem to serve you as well as you had hoped, revisit and revise them, making new rules to dictate how you interact with each other. It is possible that you will find that having a friendly relationship just isnt possible for you and your ex and decide that the best course of action is to end your relationship all together.
