How to Stop Thinking About an Ex Who Got Married

If you catch yourself constantly thinking about a former significant other who got married, it may be because you have not fully let go of your past relationship. The unwillingness to let go of a relationship once it's over can lead to distraction and feelings of sadness or anger. Accepting the loss of your relationship and the marriage of your former partner will make it easier for you to stop thinking of her, thus allowing yourself to move on with your life.

Instructions

Remove all of the items from your home and workspace that remind you of your former partner. These might include pictures, letters, gifts, shared music and other mementos that remind you of him. Removing these items will take away the constant reminder of your time with him.

Write down any memories of happiness or sorrow that you feel when you think about her and her marriage. Explain how you're feeling and make a list of everything that made you happy or caused you pain during your relationship. Journaling is an effective way to clear up your thoughts and relieve feelings of stress or sadness associated with her marriage.

Find a new hobby or pastime that keeps your mind off him. Join a club or start a new hobby that you've never tried before and meet new friends who share the same interests. When you involve yourself in other activities, you will begin to think less often about your married ex.

Pay attention to someone else. Whether you are looking to date or prefer to stay single, finding a new object of affection can help keep your mind away from your ex. Making new friends is another effective way to draw your attention away from your ex and toward the new people in your life.

Write a fake goodbye letter. Many people feel as though closure is the only way to move on from a past relationship, but closure comes from within yourself and not the other person. Write your married ex a fake goodbye letter and tell him all of the things that made you happy, sad and angry about the ending of your relationship. Explain to him how you feel about his marriage honestly. You do not need to mail this letter, but you can keep it for yourself and read it whenever you find yourself thinking of him.

Accept her marriage. Accepting your loss is one of the most important ways to move on. Understand that you cannot change the fact that she is married. This may involve a period of anger or grieving, but the sooner you accept that she is married, the easier it will be for you to stop thinking of her.
