How to Earn Respect From Men

Women often struggle to have their voices heard in many fields. Within the patriarchal culture that dominates most of the world, women are considered submissive and therefore their contributions are often valued beneath those made by men. Change this dynamic in your own life by commanding respect from men.

Leave your comfort zone and speak assertively when participating in group discussions with men. Women are trained that submissive behavior is feminine and desirable. Unfortunately, speaking softly and allowing more vocal individuals to forcefully communicate their ideas makes it difficult to command respect from men, who are raised on the opposite side of this limiting dynamic.

Tell men that you do not appreciate their behavior if they disrespect you. Sometimes women feel that they must tolerate poor treatment to be polite and avoid conflict. If a man speaks to you rudely, tell him that he has no right to address women in this manner; similarly if you feel that a male colleague does not appreciate your work, explain to him that he needs to change his dismissive attitude.

Cultivate your self-confidence by taking time to hone your talents and affirm your belief in your self-worth. Others are more likely to respect an individual who believes in her abilities and is not afraid to stand up for her needs and rights. Men who are accustomed to disrespecting women will have to approach you differently if you exude an assertive confidence.

Moderate conversations in which you participate and establish balance. If you are in a meeting at work, practice good listening skills and respect the contributions of others; however, do not allow male participants to dominate the conversation. Point out imbalances and ensure that women get a fair chance to speak.

Establish a dialogue with other women, whether they are friends, co-workers or like-minded individuals you encounter in artistic or social venues. Discuss methods you have developed for gaining respect in a male-dominated world, as well as strategies for subverting patriarchal standards that result in cultural disrespect of women. Offer support for other women.
