How Do I Recover From Relationship Depression?

The end of a relationship often is difficult, and everyone handles a breakup differently. For some, a relationship's end can be emotionally draining, leading to prolonged episodes of depression. If you recently encountered a breakup and you are feeling depressed, there is hope you will fully recover and experience happiness again. There are many things you can do to overcome your post-relationship depression.

    Avoid all communication with your ex-partner. To fully recover, keep your distance from your former lover in the early breakup stages. Even if she agreed to remain your friend, the smart choice is to give her distance. Time apart is necessary, and it allows you to consider your next steps on the road to recovery.

    Allow yourself to feel sad---a natural emotional state. Initially, you should not try to avoid your post-relationship emotions. Embracing your sadness will allow you to move through bouts of depression quickly.

    Take advantage of your support network. Your friends and family can your emotional crutch to lean on after a breakup, helping you take your mind off the emotional pain. Let them be there for you.

    Go out with your friends. Visit a restaurant, bar, club or favorite hangout. Leaving the house and mixing up your daily routine will help you forget about your last relationship. Also, it puts you back into the singles lifestyle---where you might meet someone new.

    Seek counseling if necessary. It might take weeks or months before you see recovery from your depression. Assess your mental programming after a few weeks. Seek professional treatment if your mental condition worsens.
