Relationships have their ups and downs. This is not necessarily a bad thing, and disagreements can help you resolve issues and come to compromises. However, when a relationship starts to have more downs than ups, it is probably becoming unhealthy. Since a relationship becomes unhealthy slowly, it can often be hard to tell when it finally does so -- it sneaks up on you rather than changing overnight. So, if you suspect your relationship is unhealthy, you need to keep an eye out for a few key signs that will confirm or deny it for you.

Look for major lies. If your partner lies to you about whether there's any coffee left when there's actually only enough left for one cup, this is not a major lie (although it is inconsiderate). However, if he tells you he is going out with his friends but actually goes somewhere else, then you should consider this a major lie. Healthy relationships are built on honesty, so a lack of it indicates an unhealthy relationship.
2Watch for too much interconnectedness between you and your partner. You are obviously going to be doing a lot of things together and spending a lot of time together, but you should still have your own lives and activities. Otherwise, your relationship becomes your sole activity, which is not very healthy.
3Look for a lack of support. Healthy relationships have partners who support one another through the good times and bad times. An unhealthy relationship often has a partner who will be with you during the good times but nowhere to be seen during the more-difficult bad times.
4Ask yourself if you're happy. If you find yourself constantly "letting things go" or ignoring negative behavior or generally feeling less happy than you should, this is the key sign of an unhealthy relationship. Relationships should make you happy; if they don't, then they are decidedly unhealthy.
