How to Deal With a Guy Who Cheated on You

To have a healthy, nurturing and loving relationship, a strong foundation of trust and honesty is necessary. Without trust, a relationship is bound to end up in failure. One way in which a trust bond can break is through cheating. If you are involved with a cheater, it can be very difficult knowing exactly what to do when you feel like your relationship may be tainted and broken forever.

Clear your head. Take a "time out" away from your relationship. To analyze your feelings honestly and deeply, you need a little bit of perspective, and you cannot achieve that unless you take a long, hard look at what transpired. Take a couple of days away from work and go on a road trip by yourself, if possible. Escape from your surroundings to attain a firm grasp of how you feel about the infidelity --- and to determine if you can ever move on from it.

Find out if the affair is still going on. Before you decide whether you are capable of moving on in the relationship, make sure that the affair is strictly in the past and not current. Speak honestly and firmly with your partner and tell him that if he is still cheating, you will not be able to even think about continuing the relationship. Tell him to make a decision and to stick with it.

Spend time with your favorite people. Nursing the deep and raw wounds of infidelity can be devastating. Begin the healing process by confiding in and sharing your deepest feelings with the most important people in your life, such as a best friend or sister. Not only will getting your emotions off your chest help you move forward, but it can also give you strength to hear about how other people dealt with similar situations.

Communicate with your partner. To move on from such a hard situation, you will need to communicate a lot with your boyfriend and husband. Reveal your deep feelings of hurt and betrayal. Talk to him about the possibility of regaining trust. Figure out if he is willing to be responsible for his actions. If you feel that your partner regrets his actions and truly wants to move forward and make a positive change, consider the possibility of leaving the infidelity in the past and beginning a fresh, new start. Listen to what your heart is telling you to do, not what your boyfriend or friends are saying.

Improve your life. Do not allow infidelity to get the best of you. The cheating is your boyfriend's problem, not yours. Avoid wallowing in sadness and letting your feelings disrupt your life. If you need to, give yourself a short block of time to feel all of the emotions you need to feel, whether you want to cry all night or yell. However, once that short period is over, figure out what you can do to better yourself in this tough situation. Meet new friends. Start working out frequently. Go back to school and pursue a degree.

Consider couples' therapy. If you are feeling deeply scarred by your boyfriend's infidelity, it may not be so easy for you to move on. In some cases, you may require professional help as a couple. Think about couples counseling, which can be effective for teaching you and your partner how to properly communicate in order to deal with some of life's biggest obstacles.
