Healthy relationships bring out the best in people. Intimate relationships help people feel special and supported. Positive intimate relationships, however, do not just happen. When partners take the time to develop relationship skills, they do the work to form a healthy, productive, long-term partnership. By contrast, couples who don't work to develop these skills can end up feeling unhappy and even unsafe in their intimate relationships.
Nonverbal Communication
People frequently take basic communication for granted. Being able to interpret nonverbal communication increases understanding and forms the foundation of a healthy relationship. Understanding nonverbal communication includes observing body language. A person who sits stiffly, with arms crossed, may be communicating that she is angry or upset. Partners who understand this can adjust their tone or approach, perhaps allowing the other person to vent or give her some person space, if needed.
Active Listening
Active listening involves listening and interpreting what the other person says. Skills for active listening include giving a conversation complete attention, turning off the television or other distractions, and offering a partner focused attention. Partners practicing active listening should ask clarifying questions. For example; "When you say...do you mean...?" or simply, "please tell me more about that." This technique increases understanding of what is being said; it is a way for partners to tell each other they are listening and are invested in what is being said. Clear communication helps to build effective relationships.
Emotional Intimacy
Emotional intimacy and emotional awareness are key aspects of happy, healthy relationships. Partners should individually name their emotions. When a person is unable to name what he feels, it is impossible to share with someone else. Partners can also work on expressing themselves, including what they feel and what they want in the relationship. A romantic partner who doesn't share what he feels, can leave his partner feeling shut out. This dynamic often leads to increased conflict and fights between couples. Couples with emotional intimacy share both positive and negative emotions. A partner who can celebrate his loved-one's successes and offer praise and encouragement shows support and increases emotional intimacy.
Shared Values
Sharing core values helps create a basis for a solid relationship. The values of trust, honesty and respect are the most important ingredients for a healthy relationship. Having a sense of trust helps both partners know the other person is there to give support and help in good or bad times. It also helps to increase a sense of security within the relationship. Honesty is another value that is imperative to a long-term commitment. It allows both partners to feel they can be open and truthful with each other. Similarly, partners who are respectful have healthier relationships. Being non-judgmental, kind and offering admiration for each others quirks and differences are ways of showing respect to an intimate partner.
