How to Break Free From a Cheater

Ending a relationship is often difficult and painful. There are hurt feelings, changes in routine and rejection issues that compound parting ways. When someone has cheated, it heightens the pain even further. Whether your significant other has admitted the infidelity or you have discovered it on your own, the pain can be overwhelming and confusing, and you may be unsure of the wisest next step. If you decide to leave for good, here are some specific steps to help you make a clean break.

Seek professional help. Whether you confronted your partner or he admitted his infidelity to you, you may feel a sense of loss, rejection and hopelessness that a counselor or therapist could help put into a healthier perspective. Having a professional, unbiased person to talk to helps you feel healthier and stronger.

Contact an attorney if you are married or have children. Weigh your legal options and make sure you are protected in every way. Children can complicate separations, and you want what is best for you and your family.

Observe the "no contact" rule if possible. Once you have told him the relationship is over for good, leave and have as little contact as possible with him. If you have children, this will be far more difficult. He may call, text, email or beg for you to come back, and you might find yourself wanting to give him another chance, but once you have made your decision, avoiding contact is the only way to heal and move on.

Distract yourself in healthy ways. Eat healthy food and try to get exercise. Spend time with good friends and family who support and love you. Spend time outside in nice weather. If you find yourself obsessing about your significant other, write down your feelings in a notebook or journal.
