Part of making mistakes is knowing how to apologize for those mistakes in order to limit the damage they can cause. Apologies should be given thought and consideration to ensure when you give one it is effective and genuine. So the next time you hurt someone remember that delivering a heartfelt apology helps make amends for the wrongs you've done.
Instructions
- 1
Take the person to which you are apologizing aside and sit them down for the apology. If you are in a situation where this isn't an option at the time, such as at work dealing with a co-worker, ask him if you can get together later and explain you want to apologize and talk about what happened.
2Open with your apology. Let them know you are truly sorry for hurting them and causing them any grief. Make sure to make it about them and how you've affected them. Don't say things that pertain to how you feel at this time, such as "I'm so upset that I hurt you." Remember your apology is meant for the person you harmed and while it may make you feel better to apologize, the apology is to benefit them.
3Accept what you have done. State the acts for which you are apologizing and fully acknowledge that you did them or caused this grief. Simply saying sorry isn't enough and for the person you are apologizing hearing that you know and fully acknowledge the wrong you have committed is important.
4Offer to do whatever you can within reasonable means in order to make it up to the person. After acknowledging what you've done let them know you accept whatever form of punishment you will have to undergo to right your wrong. Again ensure it is reasonable and know you can't erase what you've done, but perhaps you can work and talk about ways you can prevent it from happening again.
