How to Politely Tell Someone You Have a Boyfriend

It's a dreaded situation that many women have to face: You are hanging out with friends when a guy you don't know starts flirting with you. This can leave you in an awkward spot where you can't figure out how to politely let the guy know that you have a boyfriend without coming across as rude. When turning away an inquiring guy, there is a fine line between being courteous and rude.

Instructions

Turn to face the individual who is insinuating that he would like to ask you out.

Apologize politely in a level voice, stating that you are sorry if you led him on at all. It is important to not get angry with the inquiring individual for not knowing that you already had a boyfriend, because he probably didn't know. Shouting, raising your voice or creating a scene will embarrass both of you.

Tell the individual that you are currently seeing someone or are in a relationship. Don't go into too much detail about your relationship unless the inquiring individual is someone within your circle of friends. Telling a stranger about your relationship can make the situation awkward.

Walk away. Continuing a conversation with the inquiring individual can mislead him into thinking that you are interested in him.
