How to Leave a Cheater

If you've discovered that your boyfriend, girlfriend, husband or wife has been cheating on you, chances are you're hurt, confused and angry. While some couples find a way to work through this betrayal, others break up instead of remaining together. If you've been cheated on and are looking for a way out of your relationship or marriage, you're not alone. While you're in for a difficult time in your life, the choice to leave may be the best one for you.

Take time apart from your partner in order to clear your head. Spend time with your family and friends, all of whom should support and comfort you during this time. If you're having trouble finding the support you need from your family or social circle, consider joining a support group for people who are experiencing or who have experienced infidelity.

Decide if you truly want to leave the relationship for good. If you're weighing the options - staying against leaving - take an honest look at the way your partner has behaved since you've found out about the infidelity. Is he acting compassionate and understanding, or is he pushing you to get over it and not talk about it anymore? Is he taking responsibility for his cheating, or is he trying to make it seem smaller than it really is?

Take plenty of time to think about your course of action. If you live with your partner or have children together, the decision to leave the relationship will come with a lot of details to get in order. No matter how angry you are, it's important to think through every aspect of leaving your relationship. You need to be practical even when acting on your emotions.

Make the decision on your own by listening to your intuition and choosing to do what you know is truly the best choice. Your partner, family and friends, as well as the people in your partner's life, may try to influence your decision, but it's important that you follow your own line of thinking.

Speak with a counselor. Whether you were cheated on once and ended your relationship immediately, or you dealt with years of cheating from your partner, speaking with a professional can help you get through the range of emotions you'll undoubtedly experience. This is especially important if, along with being cheated on, you were also abused in some way.
