Breakup Recovery for Men

Breakups in movies are often dramatic, with one partner storming out of a room and the other realizing he is losing the best thing that has ever happened to him. In these instances, the person who came to terms with his loss ended up winning back his love after some string of anecdotes involving love letters and other hopeless professions of love. In the real world, though, breaking up is often the last chapter to a relationship and resolving conflict isn't always a choice. Men and women recover from breakups in different ways. According to Men's Health, men handle breakups with more depression, distress and anxiety than women do.

Take Time to Grieve

If your breakup is new you need to allow yourself some time to grieve. Whether your relationship lasted two years or two months, this change of direction in your life is going to be a rough and emotional one. You may have the urge to dive into your work or find as many distractions as possible to try to forget your significant other and what has happened. This is OK, but try to take a few minutes each day to sit and think. If you feel the urge to cry then let yourself. There is no need to feel embarrassed about it. If you want, let yourself cry for a few minutes in your home where no one has to see you. When you are done, wash your face and go about your day.

Spend Time With People

Remember the time you wanted to go to the state championship basketball game with your college buddies and your significant other said you had to go to her family reunion? Now is the time when you don't have to cater to what someone else wants to do and you can do all the things you've been wanting to do. This is a time to reconnect with friends you had before you and your significant other got together. It's OK to talk about your breakup with these people but remember to have fun with them as well. Also, remember to vent openly about your breakup but also have the respect to inquire about their lives as well. Don't cry on the shoulders of mutual friends because that puts them in the position to choose sides.

Take Care of Yourself

Get off that couch you've been spending hours on and get out of that bed you can't seem to get enough of. Take advantage of your company's gym membership or try taking a yoga class. According to the Mayo Clinic, yoga postures and exercises bring together physical and mental awareness to help manage stress and relax your body. You could also get a new hair cut. Spend some money on clothes or put a new coat of paint in your living room. If you care of yourself and your surroundings during this time you will feel better

Let Your Ex Be Your Ex

You might feel the urge right now to call your ex, drive by her apartment, visit her at work or maybe just see if her car is there. Refrain from sending her text messages or emails for the first few months after a breakup. Don't call her and ask her reconcile. These gestures will more than likely end badly. You are going through a breakup because your relationship is broken and either one or both of you decided it could not be fixed. Instead of a late-night emotional phone call to your ex, call one of your buddies or co-workers and ask him out for a meal or a drink. Remember, though, not to overdo it on the alcohol. Too many drinks can lead to unwanted and unintended drunken text messages to your ex.
