How to Ignore an Ex-Lover and Move On

An ideal ex is a character from your story who's faded from starring role to bit part. If you're having trouble moving on because you have an ex who keeps showing up in your life, you can reclaim your independence in a variety of ways.

Instructions

Set clear boundaries. If your ex insists on trying to involve you in every aspect of her life, tell her you don't want to know about her relationships or listen to her tales of family drama. Be clear that you aren't going to use favorite nicknames, reminisce about the good times, or stroke his ego the way you did when you were together. Establish a tone that is cordial but firm, letting her know that discussions about your past relationship are off-limits.

Change your habits to create separation. It may seem painful and unfair to give up familiar circumstances, such as circles of friends, a place of worship, club, or even a job. Yet, making such changes may help you to escape the "orbit" of the old relationship -- if you have the flexibility to do so, and your ex isn't willing to compromise. By starting over with a new scene, you will be putting your ex behind you for good.

Change your contact information. If your ex just won't leave you alone, and you never want to see or hear from her again, change your phone number (or block her calls,) unfriend and block her from all of your online social networks, and filter her emails as spam. If the attempts at contact continue, consider seeking a restraining order with the police.
