How to Be a Good Activist & Boyfriend

A man who is an activist in any area and protests to make changes while also being someone's boyfriend might find that balancing the different sides of his life can be challenging. Unless your significant other is also an activist in the same area, there might not be a mutual interest in going to activist protests. It is nonetheless possible to be a good activist and a good boyfriend via communication, respect and attention to other details.

Talk to your significant other about your activism. A good boyfriend not only shares his opinions in his relationship, but explains why he feels that way. It is also good for your activism if your partner understands how important it is to you. Your significant other can support your endeavors even without a full understanding of the issues, as long as they know what it means to you.

Respect others in all situations. A good activist respects the opinions of others and considers the opinion even if he disagrees with the beliefs. A good boyfriend also needs to respect the opinions, actions and beliefs of his significant other. In both situations, respect is vital to putting your cause forward and keeping the relationship happy. It might even require respecting that your significant other is not willing to take an active part in the causes you support.

Keep yourself well-groomed. The other person in your relationship will appreciate that you take your time to look your best, whether it is for them or for your cause. A well-groomed man will also have a better reception when protesting because he looks professional and put-together.

Take time out of your cause to spend with your significant other. Though your cause is important to you, you need to make time for your relationship as well if you want to keep it going. This might mean missing out on some protests or putting the activism aside to plan a special evening or a weekend getaway. Show that while your beliefs are strong, the relationship is also important to you.
