How to Cope With Disappointment from a Relationship Ending

Breakups can shake up your life. Your routines and where you live can change. How you spend your time can change. Who your friends are can change. Your self-esteem can be affected. It can be difficult to cope with the disappointment from a relationship ending. Your feelings of self-worth are put to the test. However, there are some things you can do to keep your spirits up and get over the disappointment.

Instructions

    1

Reconnect with family and friends. A romantic relationship sometimes causes you to neglect or give less time to family and friends, so now that your relationship has ended, reconnect with these people. They can offer fun and a sympathetic ear.

    2

Do things to make yourself busy. Sitting around thinking about the relationship and what went wrong only makes things worse. Instead, learn to cook or play a musical instrument. Start exercising or reading more. Volunteer at a local hospital. You'll not only be busier, but you will feel good about yourself.

    3

Pamper yourself. If it's within your financial means, buy that thing you've had your eye on. Take yourself out for a day on the town. Show yourself a good time.

    4

Express your feelings creatively. Write a poem, story or song. Paint a painting. Get your feelings down on paper. You don't have to save these creations or show them to anyone else.

    5

Accept that the relationship is over. It can be natural to hope you and the other person will reconcile and get back together. While that could happen, it's best to move on and accept that the relationship is over.

    6

Avoid overanalyzing the relationship. You might be tempted to recount every detail, trying to figure out just what went wrong, but that only makes you feel worse.

    7

Realize that you'll have other relationships in the future. Think like an athlete: An athlete makes a lot of shots but also misses a lot. A good baseball player gets a hit around 30 percent of the time, meaning he often is unsuccessful too. Relationships can be like that too. You won't hit a home run every time, but just keep trying. There will be more relationships in the future, and one day you might hit that game-winning grand slam.
