How to Apologize to a Former Boyfriend

Whether your aim is to try to get your former boyfriend to come back to you or you simply want to make amends for wrongs in your past, apologizing to him can be difficult. How you go about apologizing will have an effect on how successful you are. However, it is important to remember that just because you apologize does not mean that he will forgive you. However, you can rest assured that you have done everything you can to make things right.

Wait until the appropriate time to approach your ex with the apology. If he is already in a bad mood or is still very angry with you, it is not a good time. As a general rule, apologize as soon as possible, but if you wait until things simmer down and he is calm, you have a better chance of receiving the forgiveness you are asking for.

Meet face to face. It may be hard to see him, but apologizing in person shows you are sincere about the apology. He will be able to tell by your body language and your eyes that you truly mean what you are saying. Your ex will likely be as uncomfortable as you are.

Word the apology so you do not place the blame on him. An apology is an admission of something you have done wrong. Saying "I'm sorry you feel that way" or "I'm sorry I made you angry" implies that you did nothing wrong and he was really the one at fault. Admit your part of the mistake you are apologizing for.

Explain yourself thoroughly, but do not spend a lot of time rehashing everything that happened. Simply explain what you did wrong and why you are apologizing. Explaining too much leads to rambling and a sense of rehearsal and insincerity.

Be honest and genuine. Since he is your ex, you have nothing to gain by lying to him about what happened in the past. Do not mislead your ex with your intentions.

Avoid giving mixed signals. Let him know exactly why you are apologizing. Whether it is because you feel badly, want to be friends or want him back, he will appreciate knowing where you stand.

Offer some form of reconciliation. For instance, offer to take him out to dinner or to buy him tickets to his favorite sporting event as a good-will gesture. He may or may not accept this gesture, but it shows you are serious. If your goal is to get him back, this can also help your cause.

Avoid having expectations for his reaction. He may or may not accept your apology. If your intentions are for him to forgive you, it can be a big let down if he does not. Go into the apology with the expectation that you will feel better for apologizing and that is it. If he accepts, that is wonderful. But if he does not, you can feel better knowing you did what you had to do.
