How to Adapt to Being Single

You are finally out of that unhealthy, stagnant, unfulfilling relationship. Well, good riddance. There is cause for celebration. Being single again gives you the opportunity to enjoy your freedom, get to know yourself and reconnect with family and friends. It's time to paint the town red, sleep in the middle of the bed and drink milk straight from the carton. So cue the Sinatra, because the best way to adapt to being single is to start doing things your way.

Instructions

    1
Do things your ex wouldn't dream of.
Do things your ex wouldn't dream of.

Relish your freedom. Do what you want. Remember all those activities you had to compromise on? Now is your chance to do it your way. Jump out of that plane, ride a motorcycle, watch romantic comedies, order that NBA cable package, basket weave and host slumber parties. It's your show now. Enjoy yourself.

    2
Be constructive with your time. Get ahead at work.
Be constructive with your time. Get ahead at work.

Keep busy. Nothing keeps your brain from overanalyzing a deceased relationship and your hand from speed dialing your ex like good old-fashioned hard work and mindless activities. So get up and clean the house, work overtime, go to the movies, run a marathon, read (or write) a book, travel or join a club.

    3
Nothing reeks of desperation like someone who doesn't know how to be alone.

Get to know yourself. Reflect on ways you can improve as a person individually and as a person in a couple. Figure out what you want and need out of your next relationship during this valuable single time. Take your time being a lone wolf before you jump into something new.

    4
    Lean on your support system.

Reconnect with your friends and family. There is probably a relative or friend you have been neglecting because he didn't get along with your ex. Well, you ex is gone now. So pick up the reins, salvage and mend that relationship. You will enjoy spending quality time with your friends and family.

    5
Nothing mends a broken heart like retail therapy.

Spend money on you. No more obligatory presents, random bills that have nothing to do with you and other couple's expenses. Spend all of your surplus income on yourself. You no longer have someone nagging about your spending habits and begging you to save up for a shared plan or project. Your money is your own.

    6
One can be single and hot and sexy.

Groom. Get all your parts waxed, buffed, cut and shined. Just because you are single does not mean you are a leper. When you look good, you feel good. Now, put down that cookie and get on a treadmill. Exercising releases endorphins and will pull you out of your funk and ward off depression.

    7
Dating doesn't have to lead to a long-term relationship.
Dating doesn't have to lead to a long-term relationship.

Date when you feel like it. Don't date to get married or to jump right back into a relationship. Date to keep your interpersonal skills from getting rusty. Date to get out of the house, for the free food, the witty repartee, the movie debate and the flirty compliments.
