The Top Stresses for Couples

Every couple has their own set of issues, stresses and barriers to overcome. Problems vary from couple to couple, but there are a few stressful situations that cause more strain than others. Also, a series of small stressors can eventually overwhelm and become a big problem. Luckily, there's help for all types of problems, from constant bickering to infidelity. If you and your spouse love each other, the goal is to save your relationship and move forward.

According to Marriage and Problems, sexual issues are one of the top 10 stressors for couples. A person with a sex addiction has an abnormally high sex drive and is obsessed and preoccupied with sex. This addiction makes it difficult for the person to live a normal life, from functioning at work to participating in a relationship. As with most addicts, sex addicts deny that they have a problem and use other people as scapegoats. Aside from ruining a relationship, a sex addict will put himself in harm's way, running the risk of physical harm and disease. Sex addiction can take many forms, including excessive masturbation, infidelity, use of pornography and cybersex.

According to Dr. Kalman M. Heller, a psychologist, fertility problems cause sometimes irreversible damage to a marriage. Couples who face infertility have a difficult time getting pregnant. A frustrating part of finding out that you're infertile is that doctors aren't always able to pinpoint the problem. If a couple tries to get pregnant for a year without luck, they then have to visit a doctor and possibly start a series of potential solutions. Doctors who specialize in this field could suggest oral drugs, intrauterine insemination or finding a surrogate.

According to Marriage and Problems, long-distance couples face their own set of relationship problems. Some couples attempt to maintain their relationship while being separated by millions of miles. This might be the only option if both people are having difficulty finding a job and can't afford to pass up an employment opportunity. While it's easy to get a plane ticket and plan a visit, financial restraints make it difficult for a couple to spend time together. The distance forces the relationship to progress slowly, which can be stressful if the couple is older and ready to move on with their lives.

Some seemingly small problems can build up and ultimately put a lot of stress on a relationship, even threatening to split up a couple. Constant conflict, particularly when one or both partners don't know how to fight fairly, can break down communication. Other couples face avoidance issues -- when one partner wants to give and receive affection, the other is standoffish. Marriage and Problems lists communication issues as a major problem in relationships.
