How to End a Relationship Without Losing Mutual Friends

When a couple breaks up, it can be difficult to not talk about the ending of the relationship with your friends. But this can cause problems if they're also her friends. Keep the breakup between yourselves and work on setting limits for transitioning back into friendship to make sure you don't lose your mutual friends.

Deal with the breakup as a couple first without bringing your friends into the drama; this will actually lessen the drama. Work together to find out why you're not continuing the relationship and opt to see it as a positive step.

Set a time frame for transitioning out of the relationship and into friendship. One of you might need a few weeks without speaking and the other might need months. Tell each other truthfully how you feel. Define the boundaries that you need to complete the transition and not fall back into the comfortable routine you had as a couple. Stick to it.

Maintain a positive opinion of the other person. Want the best for him. This attitude communicates to your mutual friends that all is well and this relationship is simply something that didn't work out or wasn't meant to be.

Make every attempt to keep social outings fun and lighthearted. Ending your relationship as a romantic couple doesn't preclude you from enjoying the best that life has to offer together. Keeping your mutual friends and, therefore still being in each other's circle, may be difficult at first. In time, things will settle down.
