How to Write a Professional Letter Ending Your Relationship

There are valid reasons to break up with your partner by letter. When ending a relationship, there is a chance of confrontation or heightened emotions. Many people find it easier and more effective to express their feelings when writing. Writing a letter gives you time to work through your thoughts and prevents interruptions or rebuttals. In order for the message to resonate, you must remain mature and professional in your approach.

Instructions

Write a list of the reasons for the breakup and topics to cover in the letter. It gives you a clear direction and ensures you do not miss any key points.

Use your partner's name in the salutation. Avoid any nickname or pet name as this may give the impression you are holding on to sentimental attachments.

Inform your partner of the purpose of your letter. Refrain from becoming sentimental or reliving the good times you shared. This will send mixed signals and may give your partner a false sense of hope.

List your reasons and provide any necessary explanation. For example, if you are breaking up with your partner due to infidelity on their part, explain why you find this unacceptable or how your trust in them has been permanently lost.

If your partner lives with you in your home, set the expectation for their departure. Advise them the length of time they have to move to another residence.

Wish them well in their future endeavors and personal relationships. If you wish to remain friends, make this known. Be understanding if they do not wish the same.

Address the envelope and drop it in the mail. If your partner lives with you, leave the letter in a place you know they will find it.
