Many people think that abuse is merely physical or involves dramatic verbal displays, such as screaming. So they may remain in relationships even though they are being abused subtly in many ways every day. You should know the primary symptoms of emotional abuse so you can seek help, either alone or with your partner. Terminating the relationship may be the ultimate remedy.

Smothering

Emotionally abusive people tend to hover constantly, allowing you little time to spend with yourself or with others. If your partner continually broods or directly objects when you express the need to spend time with friends or relatives, or to do things on your own, that person is engaging in a form of emotional abuse.

The Power of Words

Emotional abusers will use language to belittle. They may mock a partner's appearance or ability, often in public. If you call the abuser on this, he may defend himself by claiming he was "kidding." Abusers often use aggressive language, so that "requests" sound like orders.

Quiet Abuse

Emotionally abusive people tend to manipulate through sulking and pouting, behavior meant to make you feel guilty or responsible for the abuser's mood.

Threats

Abusers will punish their partners by threatening to leave or to withhold financial support. They may threaten partners with bodily harm (in which case you must call the police) or threaten to harm themselves.

Bring on the Drama

Abusers tend to argue, even over small issues. They are given to sudden mood swings, and often use their "depression" to silence criticism and draw attention to themselves.

Living in Denial

Abusers will dismiss your value by denying your recollections, perceptions and personal needs. They will insist you're exaggerating when you complain about their behavior.
