How to Deal With a Domineering Person

A domineering person tries to control you or boss you around. This can be a friend, boss, co-worker or family member. He tells you what to do and gives you little say. He's quick to make decisions and take charge in a situation, even in ones where he is not suited to do so. He also isn't receptive to feedback or lots of questions. When dealing with a domineering person, keep your cool. Stand up for yourself without starting an argument or fight.

Understand the dominant person's role. If the person is a boss or parent, then being dominant might be a part of her role in your life. While that doesn't mean she should overly dominate you, she might just be trying to carry out the duties of her position. As well, there might be other causes for her dominance, such as insecurity, bad occurrences in the past, stress or personal problems.

Avoid asking a lot of questions or detail-oriented questions to a domineering person. He might see this as a weakness and then try to further dominate you. Instead, ask these questions of someone else that can help.

Practice how you'll deal with a dominant person before dealing with her. Practice what you want to say and how you want to say it. This makes your dealings quicker and less stressful.

Speak to a domineering person with confidence. While you don't want to act pushy, acting shy and unsure may cause him to act more domineering toward you.

Express your frustration to the dominant person in a calm manner. Don't yell, name-call or act accusatory. Speak calmly and express that she's acting in a domineering manner that's negatively affecting you. Express you want to improve your relationship and avoid further problems down the line.

Speak to a supervisor, person in human resources or other authority figure if you are confronted by a domineering person in the workplace. Explain your situation and that you seek help dealing with this domineering person. This person can offer guidance and also speak to the domineering person.

Avoid the domineering person if he won't stop domineering you. This can mean ending a relationship, quitting a job or avoiding the places this person frequents. Avoidance is a last resort.
