While it may be your intention to work out the problems in your relationship, sometimes you may have to end it despite those intentions for various reasons, such as emotional immaturity and insecurity, safety of your life, a lack of direction in the relationship, or infidelity. Before you end the relationship, you should be honest with yourself and decide whether the problems in your relationship can be solved or whether it's time to move on.
What Are the Root Problems in the Relationship?
One of the main things you need to do is find out what issues are threatening your relationship and why. For example, if your girlfriend constantly nags at you and always tells you that what you do for her is not good enough for her even though you're trying hard to please her, ask yourself if you believe her attitudes will change eventually if you work on the problem. If you don't believe they will, consider ending the relationship.
Can Your Problems Be Worked Out?
For some relationship problems, a little counseling and compromise may help save the relationship. If your boyfriend wants to become more financially responsible because he plans to marry you in the future but he's been slacking in those goals, help your boyfriend by teaching him how to spend less than he earns, save more of his income, and look for other ways to earn extra income. Also contribute some of your funds toward this goal so he won't feel like he's by himself in this effort.
What Role Are You Playing in the Conflict?
Ask yourself if you're contributing to the conflict in the relationship. If your partner feels that you don't communicate your concerns to him as well as you should, you should look for better ways to express your feelings. Or if you tend to show an ungrateful attitude when you don't get your way, this may be a sign of immaturity on your part.
Does Your Partner Want to End the Relationship?
It may be that you want to remain in the relationship but your partner wants it to end. In this case, you should decide if you want to hold on and hope that your partner will change her mind. If your partner still wants to move on, then you should end the relationship.
