How to Battle Jealousy

Jealousy is a normal feeling that almost everyone gets when they are in relationships. It is not a binary state, though. It is possible to have degrees of jealousy; small amounts are nothing to be afraid of, while large, unreasonable amounts of jealousy can ruin your relationship. Either way, though, you should do your best to battle your jealousy as it is not a very nice feeling. The way to do this is to focus on building your self-esteem in order to have more faith in both yourself and your relationship as a whole.

Instructions

    1

Confront the feeling. Jealousy can often feel like anger, self-doubt and other negative emotions. Indeed, jealousy causes emotions rather than being an emotion itself. So, the first step in battling jealousy is recognizing it for what it is. This will give you a good foundation to work with to overcome it.

    2

Exercise, start a hobby or, preferably, do both. These will both increase your feeling of general self-worth because you will be accomplishing something on your own. Jealousy comes from low self-worth, so if you can improve how you feel about yourself you will start to eliminate your jealousy by attacking it at its source.

    3

Write your feelings down on paper. This will help you articulate exactly what they are, which will also put them in perspective. When you are reading your own feelings back to yourself you can see how silly they sound, which will help you get over them.

    4

Distract yourself. Jealousy comes from overthinking situations and reading too much into them. So, if you feel jealousy coming on, do something that forces you to think about something else, such as going for a walk, going for coffee with a friend or working on a project. This will stop your jealousy from spinning out of control and nip it in the bud.
