How to Fall in Love Again After the Trust Has Been Broken

One of the most important fundamentals in any relationship is trust. Without trust, a relationship does not have two feet to stand on. If the trust in a relationship is broken, the healing process usually is long and hard, and involves a lot of effort and patience from both people. Fall in love by rebuilding the trust in your relationship, one step at a time.

Put the past to rest by not dwelling. Although it can be difficult to stop thinking about painful past situations in your relationship, you need to gain clarity of mind to move forward. Talk to your partner about the both of you making a strong effort to let the past go.

Discuss forgiveness. If you are in the wrong, honestly and sincerely ask your partner if she can forgive you. If you do not believe her answer is authentic, perhaps it may be time to move on. If your partner, on the other hand, cheated on you or otherwise broke your trust, ask yourself if you can truly forgive her actions -- and rid yourself of any feelings of hostility or bitterness. If you are truly willing to move on with her, make a firm decision.

Communicate with each other by discussing your feelings. A lot of broken trust stems from poor communication. Whether you and your partner just do not bother to speak to each other candidly, or whether you omit the truth frequently, bad communication can shake the core of a relationship. Stop emotions from bubbling below the surface by talking to each other about how you feel, without judgment, blame and attacking. From the wronged person talking about feelings of hurt to the other person discussing why he did what he did, communication involves a lot of active listening.

Work on getting closer as a couple by spending more time together. When something big causes trouble in a relationship, it can be a sign that something needs to change. For example, a couple simply might not spend enough time together, which could lead to friction, rash actions and damaged trust. To enhance your relationship and fall in love again despite what you have gone through, set up a date and look at your relationship from a fresh perspective. Have a picnic in a park together. Go to an amusement park. Check out a foreign film festival. Work on being a couple and enjoying life together again. Remember what made the both of you fall in love in the first place.

Realize that trust takes time. Regaining trust is a complex process that doesn't have a time frame. Fully finding trust can sometimes take years. If you truly believe in your relationship, show patience and diligence on your quest to fall back in love. Pat yourselves on the back when you achieve the small things as a couple, even if it is just a hearty laugh together after a romantic meal at a downtown bistro. Look at the big picture.
