How to Create a Singles Ad

Knowing how to write a personal ad can make all the difference between finding a date and spending another Saturday night staring at the dog. This is your opportunity to impress the right type of person, so take the time to do it right. Read on to learn how to create a singles ad.

Be honest about yourself. If you prefer a ballgame to cuddling at the beach, say so. If you really must date someone who loves the ballet, write it down. The idea is to attract someone compatible, not just anyone who consents to a date.

Describe your home life. If your apartment is a sty, admit you lead a happily cluttered life. If you have a Saint Bernard puppy, then say so. It is better to attract a person who isn't bothered by that sort of thing than to go out with someone who can't stand the mess. It's unfair to waste your time or anyone else's time.

Put in family information. Tell people if you are divorced. List the ages (but not the names) of your children, and whether or not they live with you. Focus the ad on who you are, but be very upfront about the family in your life. Do not 'spring' four children and a live-in, out-of-work brother on a new mate.

Post a recent picture in your singles ad. Even if you had fabulous abs in college, now is the time to show the slightly more rotund you. Nothing drops self-esteem through the floor like meeting a new person for the first time and watching his or her face fall.

Use real words, not scary ones. It is better to post that you want friendship and more than to boast you are an animal in bed. Swallow your pride and have a friend read over your personal ad before submission. Pick someone who dates the kind of people you want to date. Take their advice seriously, and adjust the ad if they say you sound like an ass.

Be patient. Somewhere out there is a person who can't wait to meet you. Create the best ad you can. Sooner or later, the phone will ring with Mr. or Ms. Right on the other end.
