How to Get Over a Major Heartbreak

While life is full of many wonderful people and experiences, most people will experience their fair share of major heartbreaks. Pulling yourself up and moving on from grief can take months or even years, depending on the circumstances. Allowing yourself to grieve and forcing yourself to keep living life, even if you do not feel like it every second of the day, help you to get over a major heartbreak.

Instructions

Let yourself wallow for a little while, and then push yourself forward. While being stuck in the throes of grief is not healthy, bypassing it entirely prevents you from truly healing in the end.

Think forward, not back, by focusing on what you have learned from the situation, rather than blaming yourself or someone else. It is helpful to think over what you will do differently in the future, rather than focusing solely on what you think you, or someone else, should have done differently in the past.

Give yourself an outlet. Start a journal to jot down your thoughts. This helps you to release emotions and thoughts, and it also gives you something to look back on once you do get over a major heartbreak.

Talk to a trusted friend or family member, but avoid toxic conversations. One of the best ways to get over a major heartbreak is to work through your emotions with the shoulder and advice of someone you trust. However, a person who is more intent on focusing on the negative typically will not be helpful. When working through heartbreak, it is important to remain as positive as possible, even when you are feeling your worst.

Do not try to be friends right away if your heartbreak is due to a breakup or divorce. While you might feel like you have lost your best friend, trying to move on from heartbreak by being friends immediately with your ex likely will leave you confused and delay the healing process. Sometime down the road, when you are at peace with your past relationship and how it ended, perhaps you and your ex can reconnect on a platonic level.

Reconnect with yourself. When you feel like you are getting down, do something specifically for you that you love. Read a book, go out with friends or get involved in your community. Turning your anger or sadness into something positive makes getting through a major heartbreak much more bearable.
