Tips for a Seventh Grade Girlfriend

One of the most notable milestones in a girl's adolescence is having her first boyfriend. While some girls wait until their mid-teens or even college to have a boyfriend, others may have their first boyfriend in middle school. For girls who do have boyfriends at an earlier age, there are steps that can be taken to ensure healthy relationships.

Take Things Slow

You may be excited to have your first boyfriend, but it is important to take things slow, so that the two of you keep things at a pace that works for both of you. Avoid making long-term plans with your boyfriend, as you may find yourself disappointed if things do not work out. Do not detach yourself from your regular group of friends, and limit the amount of time you spend with your boyfriend. This will help ensure that you maintain strong relationships with your regular friends.

Respect Personal Space

Avoid encroaching on your boyfriend's personal space. If he has basketball practice, for example, ask if it is okay if you attend to watch him. Do not show up every place he is at to avoid "suffocating" him. However, you should still support your boyfriend's interests. Also, do not assume it is okay to hang out with him and his friends, as he may want to just spend time with them. Try not to take it personally if he would like time away from you, as this is natural. Expect the same respect and courtesy for yourself as well.

Set Boundaries

Your boyfriend may be interested in kissing or engaging in other sexual acts you may not be ready for. Discuss what you are ready for upfront to avoid a series of uncomfortable conversations throughout your relationship. Be honest with him and do not lie about what you are willing to do with him, as you may find yourself in a position you are not ready for. Also, do not send suggestive text messages or have internet chats with him, as he may show others and cause you embarrassment at school.

Learn to Trust

You may find that you experience jealousy within your relationship, even if your boyfriend has done nothing to provoke this. Dealing with your emotions and feelings of jealousy will help you in this and future relationships. If you see your boyfriend talking to another girl, do not cause a scene or forbid him from speaking to any girl who is not you. You will need to tell yourself that it is okay for him to have platonic relationships and address your feelings of jealousy early on. Also, avoid reading his Facebook or Twitter profiles to "check" on him, as this may cause unnecessary issues for the two of you.
