How to Write a Long Distance Break Up Letter

Breaking up with someone is already challenging enough as it is, but what about when the person lives hundreds, or even thousands, of miles away? This leaves you in a confusing situation: should you still end the relationship, even if you can't do it in person? Will you regret your decision later? Despite the difficulties of this situation, it is still important to go through with a breakup if your heart is not in the relationship anymore. A detailed breakup letter, along with a phone call, is an official way to end a long-distance relationship.

Instructions

    1

Include a phone call. In addition to your breakup letter, preferably before you send it, include a phone call that delivers the major news in a more first-hand way. A breakup letter is useful in the sense that it leaves no room for interpretation on the status of the relationship, but a phone call is a more personal, acceptable way to end a relationship, especially a serious one. Respect the fact that you cannot end this relationship in person, but do not merely drop your ex a letter and expect not to hear from him. It is kind and courteous to include a phone call with your official breakup letter.

    2

Explain your reasoning. Lay out all the reasons why you are ending this relationship. Be honest; perhaps you simply do not feel the same anymore, or there is someone else. You may be tempted to leave out some important details, but your ex is likely striving to figure out what she did wrong. Simply state exactly why you do not see a future in the relationship any longer, and do not leave any room for questions or second thoughts.

    3

Lay out your expectations for the future. If you do not want to hear from your ex any longer, let him know. State that you will not be meeting him again to talk, and you do not want to hear "his side". He will likely want to ask questions or say something that he thinks you need to hear. Try to be straightforward and honest in your reasoning from the beginning so many of his questions are already answered.

    4

Be perfectly clear. This is such an important step in writing a serious long distance breakup letter. It is vital that you do not be anything but completely honest and straightforward in your letter. She is going to be wounded and bitter, but if this decision is necessary for you, postponing it will only postpone her sorrow for a later date. Do not listen to any guilt trips and do not reconsider once you have delivered the news. This sort of decision will only become more painful as time goes on.
