How to Not Be Boring on a First Date

First dates can be a nerve wracking experience even for the most experienced, and one of the most important skills you need to learn is how to be an interesting companion and not to bore your date. They key is practice makes perfect.

Consider your date's interests. Write down questions and topics based on her interests. Make questions open so they cannot be answered with yes or no. However, take care not to be "know it all" with an answer for everything.

Scan through the newspaper. Select articles for conversation topics, especially any directly relating to your date's interests. Reading a good quality newspaper regularly is an excellent way of staying informed about current affairs and always having something interesting to discuss. Being able to say, "I read an article about that in The Times" sounds more intelligent than "I saw it on Fox TV".

Practice your date at home with a solo role-play. Wear the outfit you plan to wear on the date and sit or stand in front of your mirror. You may initially feel foolish, but you'll benefit from seeing what your date sees. Focus on your smile, body language, expressions, and eye contact. If you have a video camera, filming yourself from across the room will help give you a different perspective on how you look and sound.

Record your voice if you do not have a video recorder. This is optional, as is the video. It helps you to hear what your date will hear. If you sound nervous with a high pitched or shaky voice, use breathing exercises to help slow your speech and bring the tone down. If your voice is monotone and dull, you can work on bringing it up slightly.

Maintain interested body language. Lean forward slightly and keep your body turned toward your date, use eye contact without staring and try not to be distracted by other things going on around you.

Listen 'actively' and keep a balance between how much each of you talk. Ask your date to clarify, explain or elaborate occasionally. Show you are listening with your facial expressions, nodding and making "mmmm" and "ahhh" sounds. Reflect back what she says. A reflective response to: "I really enjoyed the opera" might be: "I'm pleased you enjoyed it, because I love opera too. What's your favorite aria?"

Talk about yourself in moderation so you don't seem self-centered, but avoid being evasive. You might try something like: "I'd love to tell you more about that aspect of my life. Perhaps next time?" Maintaining some mystery about yourself is the key to getting your date to keep coming back for more. Always hold something back with the promise of more to be had.

Watch for signs your date is bored including his body turned away from you, averting gaze or fidgeting. Check for too many overly simple, closed questions or abruptly changing the subject. If he does seem bored, don't panic. Try asking what he would like to talk about or do next. If it doesn't work out, it's probably not your fault. Move on, keep practicing and above all - have fun.
