How to Handle a Long-Distance Relationship Breakup

Maintaining a long-distance relationship requires effort and patience. Regardless of how the relationship was formed, the extra effort put into making the relationship work despite the obstacles associated with distance often result in a stronger bond. The breakup of a long-distance relationship is no less painful than one that occurs in a relationship where the partners see each other daily. Breakup is a form of loss that results in grieving. Learning how to handle the loss of a long-distance relationship can help you move through the grieving process.

Instructions

    1
Crying and expressing anger helps you work through feelings of loss after the breakup.
Crying and expressing anger helps you work through feelings of loss after the breakup.

Let yourself cry or be angry. Keeping emotions pent up lengthens the time it takes for you to work through feelings of loss after the long-distance relationship ends. While crying or punching your pillow is not pleasurable, allowing yourself to express your feelings is healthy and healing.

    2

Take care of yourself physically and emotionally. Be sure to eat healthy, exercise and get enough sleep. Be kind to yourself and give yourself permission to say no to activities that are too much for you to handle or may magnify your feelings of loss.

    3

Remove reminders of the ended relationship. If you and your partner sent countless emails to one another to bridge the gap of distance, delete the emails or save them on a memory stick and get them off your computer. Put or throw away pictures and other items that lead your mind back to the relationship.

    4
The structure of a schedule can help divert your mind to other areas of your life.
The structure of a schedule can help divert your mind to other areas of your life.

Keep a normal schedule as much as possible. Although going to work or classes may be hard, having activities to divert your attention can be very helpful.

    5

Reach out to friends or see a counselor so you can talk about what you're going through. Isolation results in ruminating on the loss of the relationship. Ask a friend to come over or go out with a friend. Spend time with people who will listen when you need to talk or sit with you when you need company.
