How to Avoid Your Ex After a Breakup

Relationships work when couples spend quality time together. Sharing and communicating strengthens bonds. After a breakup, keeping a healthy distance is best. Both partners need time to regroup and reflect. There are ways to avoid your ex and not stir up wounds. Do not repeat old patterns that have the potential of bringing up pain. You can practice avoidance techniques especially if one partner is intent on re-establishing a connection and the other is not.

Establish new recreational routines. Couples develop patterns, whether it is jogging every Saturday morning in the park or frequenting a favorite restaurant. Skip the hot spots you attended with your ex. Develop new hobbies and expand your social circle. This will better ensure you avoid an awkward in-person encounter. Do not attend parties, at least for awhile, of mutual friends unless you know in advance that your ex will not be there.

Change your phone number and email address. This might sound drastic, but it eliminates the possibility that you will be communicating electronically. You can avoid talking and texting. It is almost irresistible to avoid responding to a message that is blinking on your hand-held device or is sitting in your inbox. Do not respond if it is not necessary. Stop yourself from writing letters, sending cards or driving by your ex's residence. If you do not want your ex contacting you, respect their personal space.

Transfer your job if your ex is in the same place of employment. Personal issues should not interfere with your professional life. Avoid this complication by changing your work locale if possible. Alternatively, ask to be assigned to a different bureau or office that will avoid any potential conflict. Agree to keep business responsibilities and commitments separate and not entangle co-workers into the details of your breakup.

Enlist the help of family and friends to intervene if your ex is exhibiting threatening or stalker-like behavior. Do not be afraid to contact law enforcement if the actions of your ex do not stop over a period of time. Avoidance can sometimes trigger anger. Keep yourself safe by anticipating a possible confrontation. Talk through a neutral third person if circumstances warrant.
